NPCs in BatMUD can be sometimes aggressive ("aggro"), making them attack you on sight and potentially dangerous, especially in the case you get ambushed.

The vast majority of NPCs uses the generic aggro code: it allows you to lite aggros/non-aggros with different colours with the ansi command, and doesn't initiate combat until one heartbeat has passed in case it's the first encounter of the said aggro monster in current reboot. However, if you have already been fighting with the monster, the next time you enter its room it will instantly attack you again.

There are means to attempt to go unnoticed, mainly via the invisibility spell/ability. This is by no means foolproof though. The bigger the monster, the higher the chance it'll see through your invisibility. However, rumour has that there are some rare way(s) to gain "true invisibility" too...

In some rare cases monsters may also have some non-standard aggro code, making them behave a bit differently than you'd normally see, such as instantly attacking you even if it's your first encounter with the mob that day.

Bards have a song called Soothing sounds, which makes it possible to calm aggressive NPCs, as long as they're not too high level.
