Autopsy is a folklorist skill trainable starting at guild level 15, usable on the corpses of slain creatures. It is one of the two ways a folklorist can acquire marks in their folklorist guide, along with the study creature skill. Performing an autopsy requires that you be wielding a short blade of the knife type.

Like study creature, an autopsy can reveal a creature's race, creature type (animal, mythical creature, or undead), alignment, susceptibility to physical and poison damage, and relative dangerousness. It will also tell you whether you or any folklorist has ever studied it before, or if you have ever studied any creature of the same race.

Beyond the information that can be acquired via study creature, an autopsy will reveal the type of damage that killed the creature and what types of organs the creature has. See list of organs for data on which races have which organs.

Performing an autopsy on a creature increases your combat ability against creatures of the same race until the next reboot.

The gruesome act of autopsy is one of the ways folklorists study creatures. Many a young folklorist has had to leave the room when the act of autopsy is taught, such a gruesome act it is. It involves opening the corpse of a creature, dissecting all the organs and making notes of what is found. Those skilled in dissection and swift scalpel might be able to save some of the organs. Those skilled in dissection can also try to cut a specific organ while performing the autopsy, for example 'use autopsy at corpse try heart'.
