Skill duration: 15
Type of skill: special skill.
Affecting stats: Str & Con.
It uses 20 endurance points.
The most common request outsiders give to rangers, is to hire a guide to lead them when traversing the wilderness. Rangers have, over the years, blazed many trails in the wilderness that are only visible to those trained in the art of pathfinding. Either leading a large company, or traveling alone, this allows them to save much time and effort while traveling, making them excellent guides and runners.

This skill is both automatically used when moving about, and also used actively.

Syntax:

use pathfinding at <location>
use 'pathfinding' <location>

where <location> was stored via the Location memory skill.

This will make the ranger calculate a path from one location to another and then lead their party through the woods to the desired destination.

Comments

To use this skill you must first remember a location with the location memory skill. You can 'use location memory at list' to see the list of your remembered locations. You must remember locations on specific terrain types for the pathfinding skill to work. The following terrain types must be destination terrain types:

* f - Forest
* F - Deep Forest (untested)
* h - Hills
* j - Jungle
* s - Swamp
* t - Tundra (untested)
* v - Valley (untested)

This skill does not seem to work well at all for low skill levels. With 57% I've been able to find my way 8 spaces or so so far.

When using pathfinding
You disappear into nature, heading for your target.. After a brisk hike, you arrive just where you wanted! - Success!
You think about it for a while but can't think of a good path to take. - Failure. This means you are too far from your destination for your skill level.
You can't do that from this kind of region. - Failure. You are trying to use pathfinding from an invalid terrain type.
You can't travel to that kind of region. - Failure. Your remembered location is not in one of acceptable terrain types.
When using location memory
  • Location remembered. - Success!
  • Location remembered. However, you don't thnk you could find secure paths to or from here. - This means that you remembered a location on a terrain type you can't travel to.
