While it could prove to be somewhat effective, it is not the only reason why it is done. The most important reason for this is to activate a backward healing process, a difficult technique that causes circulation to speed up regeneration. The technique is commonly used before entering combat with the enemy. It is said that the legion of the Blood God can be a dreadful sight: self-mutilated brutes who seemingly refuse to perish.
