There are few tasks more difficult, then following someone who has a head start on you, and you have no idea where they are headed. Rangers are highly trained trackers, able to follow trails left in the wilderness that are sometimes over a week old. A skilled tracker can even defeat the normal counter measures to being tracked, such as doubling over ones tracks.
