KOTE (ARMORED SLEEVES)
==== Up to the twelfth century, oriental warriors only wore a single armoured sleeve, and that was on their left arm. This was more to get the bulky armour rove sleeve out of the way of the bowstring than for protection. Sometime in the late 1100s, matching sleeves for left and right began to appear. Kote are taken as 'en suite', that is, they are designed to match each other. Even though the plate shapes may be different, the color, decoration, and foundation fabrics are typically the same. Some older versions of the kote are baggier and come farther up on the chest, while kote of the fifteenth century onwards really were more like sleeves.
