PILUM (polearm)

The famous javelin of Roman legionaries, the pilum is forged with a long, soft iron head. When a thrown pilum hit an opponent, and opponent was fast enough to block it with his shield, the pilum usually sticked into the shield, and to use the shield again, the pilum had to be removed.
