Ulath introduced the cooking skill in the summer of 2008 (news display updates 595 <analytics uacct="UA-3466433-3" ></analytics> & news display updates 602 <analytics uacct="UA-3466433-3" ></analytics>), and after that Shinarae added a second dimension to cooking by introducing the master chef skill together with its peripheral content. The food produced by the cooking skill has small bonuses, the real treats come when you start apprenticing for the master chefs. You have to have you cooking skill high enough to be able to start training the master chef skill.

Cooking can be learned by everybody. There's no background or guild restrictions and the gained master chef skill will save over reincarnations, just as the cooking skill. While there are no background restrictions, it does make the life of a chef a lot easier if you have access to the plant lore skill, especially when you advance far enough to start making the more complicated recipes. Taking one level in the explorers guild will give you enough plant lore and fishing to start training.

Now for you min-maxers. Training the cooking and master chef skills takes time, and there's a lot to figure out. Even when you have the skills to make the best recipes, there are ingredients that are hard to come by. You will need the assistance of beast masters, rangers, nuns, and perhaps the odd alchemist and merchant. The bonuses you gain are to your stats and ticks. One dish gives a boost to two, and the bonuses stack. Duration depends on at least how much you move around. If you stay put in the same room they last for several minutes. And let me just say this about the gained bonuses: they are coded by Shinarae, and if people knew the full extent of them, the cows of BatMUD would have sore nipples.

Go to A magnificent kitchen, aka Teapot's Kitchen in Arelium, talk to him and start exploring the delightful world of cooking. Bring something to eat with you.

A stove and the all important cooking utensils can be bought from Damie Polliver 1w of Teapot.

Once cooking hits 50% you can start working on the Master Chef skill and you can learn recipes. Both master chef and recipes save over reinc.

With the quests for Desolathya slooooooooooowly heading along (damn you final examss), I found it necessary to add another ingredient, namely, salt. Salt is made by boiling down sea water, so you should have no problem making large amounts of it easily.

Until those new quests hit, here are some salt-based recipes:

  • Dehydrated vegetable chips: saltx1,vegetablex3
  • Vegetable noodle bowl: waterx1,saltx1,pastax2,vegetablex2
  • Salt crust fish: fishx4,saltx3,fruitx1
  • Soft pretzels and dip: flourx3,waterx1,yeastx1,saltx1,beerx1,cheesex1,garlicx1,butterx1
