DPL list of NPCs

As you can see, the way exp variation is written in articles makes the DPL greps from NPC articles quite ...colorfull. Would it be better to have fields for min and max exp values for the NPCs from the template calculates average exp worth and that average would be used in the NPC listing OR Come up a policy about how to write down the exp values of mobs, so that the listing works. Like rounding to nearest k, having space before and after -, having each number show in k's and so on. BlackSmith 13:05, 19 October 2008 (EEST)

An issue: In some cases the exp value in the field doesn't show at all, if you know how to fix it in the template, could you message me the solution? (since the templates are locked). --Nuane

Ah yes, the problem hails from redirects. DPL fetches all articles that belong to a category/categories (e.g. category:Plesantville) and the pulls the values from given templates fields. Now if a artcile uses the old Template:Infobox Monster, it gets redirected to the new template:NPC and it generates the page just like you would have used the new one. For normal user there simply is no difference. But the problem rises when the DPL comes to the article and is expecting to find article made by the new template. The page is not actually generated, the daemon (small program) is simply looking for the field values it has been commanded to get using the given template as a roadmap. As the article itself (remeber, it is not generated yet so the redirect does not kick in) does not have the template the DPL is looking for, it returns empty handed. Simply changing the article to use the template behind the redirect (in this case template:NPC), the issue goes away. This kind if template updating _should_ be done automaticly with AWB, but the program is not up-to-date for the present wiki version we are using now (gota check that one when i got time. Or milk could check it too). BlackSmith 15:25, 1 November 2008 (EET)

Layout

The new layout sucks in my opinion, the centered headings with left-aligned information doesn't look good. --Nuane

You can hone it yourself too. Illustarte what can be done to better it if you cant do it yourself. Comments like 'that sucks' wont help nor make anything any better. BlackSmith 22:00, 27 September 2008 (EEST)

The continent shows up funnily in the layout, check out Arelium for example, as you see Laenor is located in odd position. My suggestion would be Continent: Laenor right after general description. Can someone give me a hint how to edit the template to make it so, I don't have the knowhow myself. --Nuane 17:55, 20 November 2008 (EET)

Idea was to get same kind of location field as seen ingame 'blaa blaa in central Laenor', but the 'location' field is quite widely used for all kind of info. In case of laenor, the field 'location' inholds copy&paste from wizard eye around laenor, thus quite nicely screwing the layout. The info is nice, i have myself added quite fev of those, but it breaks the template. I create new field for WE pastes and jeskkos cordinates so that the location part can be used strictly for verbal infos (northeast, far south, center of..). Wonder, with co-opeartion with jeskko's map server, the location could be fetched dynamicly from his map server and show with a nice pic or such. That would need tad bit more work tough. Finger bug

Oh, and also you screwed up by changing the template, see the finger part in Hell's dojo for an example. Please DO NOT fiddle with the templates at all if you won't bother testing them first with several articles. If you do a change to a template, it should never require change in every article. As a matter of fact, this is approximately the millionth time your template changes have broken something, so i'm seriously considering locking all templates for good. --Nuane

FYI Templates can not be "previewn" in that sense. You can test a existing template to non-exisisting article but not vice versa. Altough not this is not the place for it, you can read more about wiki editing from http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Editing Most of templates are already locked down. Feel free to take part honing them at their own discussion pages or about templates in generally at talk:templates. The finger bug was now fixed. BlackSmith 22:08, 27 September 2008 (EEST)
